Fr. Robert M. Hussey, SJ, the Provincial of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, has decided to close the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth, effective August 2021. Fr. Hussey announced his decision on 29 May 2020 in a letter to the Province. You may read Fr. Hussey’s letter, accompanying FAQs, and Br. Derby’s letter of response here.
While we are sorrowful at the decision, we are focused on the remaining time of ministry here in Wernersville. As much as possible in this pandemic, the Jesuit Center will be offering retreats, days of prayer, and other programs for spiritual renewal, and hosting groups, through August 2021. You can see our 2020-2021 program calendar here.
Anita Wood brings to the Jesuit Center staff a varied background of teaching, music, religious education, married life, and twenty years of spiritual direction practice with both Catholics and Protestants. Her favorite years were spent at Boston College for her Master’s in Religious Education. Having taught elementary and special education with students in both public and Catholic schools, Anita eventually moved on to being a Director of Religious Education in several Catholic parishes around the country. She most of all loved engaging families through a creative intergenerational process. Studying spiritual direction at Shalem Institute, an ecumenical program with a strong contemplative approach, Anita’s ministry continued to evolve as she created her own small business, Gloria Dei, which means “the Glory of God,” doing spiritual direction and retreat work in the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware. Always drawn toward Ignatian spirituality (having gone on retreat at the Jesuit Center in Wernersville since the 1980’s), Anita also completed courses of study at the Jesuit Center, specializing in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Anita has been directing people on retreat at the Center for many years as a guest director. Anita also received a certificate in supervision of spiritual directors from Neumann University, and ever learning, she is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry program at Lancaster Theological Seminary, with a special interest in spiritual growth in small group settings and the theology of Teilhard de Chardin.
