Fr. Robert M. Hussey, SJ, the Provincial of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, has decided to close the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth, effective August 2021. Fr. Hussey announced his decision on 29 May 2020 in a letter to the Province. You may read Fr. Hussey’s letter, accompanying FAQs, and Br. Derby’s letter of response here.
While we are sorrowful at the decision, we are focused on the remaining time of ministry here in Wernersville. As much as possible in this pandemic, the Jesuit Center will be offering retreats, days of prayer, and other programs for spiritual renewal, and hosting groups, through August 2021. You can see our 2020-2021 program calendar here.
In-house retreat spaces for our summer 2020 directed retreats are strictly limited to accommodate COVID-19 health & safety protocols. In-house spaces will be filled in order of deposit dates, along with consideration given to our health and safety protocols and each retreatant’s overall health and risk factors.
If available in-house retreat spaces fill, or if you are unable to attend an in-house retreat due to health concerns or travel restrictions in your community, please consider attending one of our retreats virtually via Zoom. Our virtual retreats operate much as if you were here, using Zoom and YouTube to bring you into the retreat experience while you shelter in place. You do not have to be especially tech-savvy to participate in a retreat through virtual means. Prior to your retreat start, you will receive an email with a link to the ZOOM retreat sessions, along with instructions and a schedule for your participation.
During your retreat, you will be welcomed to the retreat by your director and into the community as part of the opening prayer session. You will meet individually with your director for daily spiritual direction. You will be welcome to participate in daily Mass, any prayer services, and the retreat’s closing Mass and sharing of graces. We will also provide videos of our beautiful campus for virtual walking, prayer, and reflection on the grounds:
