Fr. Robert M. Hussey, SJ, the Provincial of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, has decided to close the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth, effective August 2021. Fr. Hussey announced his decision on 29 May 2020 in a letter to the Province. You may read Fr. Hussey’s letter, accompanying FAQs, and Br. Derby’s letter of response here.
While we are sorrowful at the decision, we are focused on the remaining time of ministry here in Wernersville. As much as possible in this pandemic, the Jesuit Center will be offering retreats, days of prayer, and other programs for spiritual renewal, and hosting groups, through August 2021. You can see our 2020-2021 program calendar here.
"You were created to make a unique contribution to the great evolutionary project initiated and continually supported by God, namely bringing all creation together into one magnificent conscious loving union… For this, God empowers you to grow in passionate love and care for all elements of the cosmos, since they, as you, all live and move and have their being in God’s love." – Louis Savary, The New Spiritual Exercises: In the Spirit of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
Jesuit Center staff members Frank Kaminski, SJ and Anita Wood will lead a day of reflection inviting gatherers to ponder and pray with the wisdom of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, 20th-century Jesuit scientist and mystic, in a way that integrates and honors matter and spirit, science and faith, and helps with discernment of our unique role in bringing God's Beloved Community to birth.
This Days of Prayer will be offered for online participation only. The virtual Day of Prayer includes:
• an orientation meeting via Zoom
• presentations and communal prayer live-streamed on our YouTube channel
• opportunities for quiet reflection and prayer
• sharing of graces via Zoom
The technology brings you into the retreat experience and the praying community while you shelter in place. You do not have to be especially tech-savvy to participate in a Day of Prayer through virtual means. Prior to the Day of Prayer, we will email you with instructions, links to the Zoom and YouTube experiences, and a schedule for your participation, and handouts.
Orientation meeting: 9:00 – 9:30 AM. The program will begin at 9:30 AM and will include input from Anita Wood and Fr. Kaminski, opportunities for quiet prayer and reflection, communal prayer based on Teilhard’s “Mass on the World,” and grace-sharing. The program will conclude by 4:00 PM.
